An Indian wedding…well…sort of..!

Indian wedding…what usually comes to mind is a ton of brown people…dressed in colorful outfits and dancing the night away!

That’s exactly what I had in mind when we were on our way to an Indian wedding reception in Flushing, NY. I didn’t really know much about the couple and I was definitely about to be pleasantly surprised.

As we walk in to the reception hall, we see a ton of Indian people, dressed in their colorful outfits, but to our surprise, saw a ton of Asian (oriental) featured people as well dressed in indian outfits. It didn’t take us long to realize that the bride was actually not Indian, but Nepali. The thing about Indian people is that we sometimes get so self absorbed in our own cultural pride that we forget that the culture we are so proud of is actually also shared by some of our neighboring countries. Never ever before had I seen so many beautiful Nepali woman, dressed in gorgeous Indian/Nepali outfits and singing along with the Indian music. For the entire evening, international borders were lost and we were all from the same part of the world, sharing the same culture and following the same rituals.

The wedding reception was held at the world’s fair marina restaurant and banquet hall (http://worldfairmarina.com/custom.html), a nice banquet hall right by the water with a gorgeous view. The place was not too big, but perfect for a small wedding reception for about 100-150 people. The place was a little hard to find and was not listed on my navigation, so it took us a couple of calls to find the place.

I’ve added a couple of videos from the reception to give you guys a glimpse into what an Indian-Nepali wedding is like. Enjoy!
