Latin Indian fusion….Yumm!
Ever had a dosa burrito or a pani puri margarita? How about a garam masala bloody mary? For those of you that aren’t too familiar with Indian food, a dosa is an Indian style crepe and a pani puri is a type of Indian fast food which consists of small fried tortillas mixed in with spices. If you are still confused, call up that Indian friends of yours and have him/her take you to an Indian restaurant to check these dishes out.
A friend of ours had mentioned a Latin-Indian fusion restaurant called ‘At Vermilion’ [http://www.thevermilionrestaurant.com] to us. Tired from a long day at work, we decided to check it out. I am a big fan of both latin American and Indian food, so I was definitely excited to check this place out.
The place looks really nice and has an indoor and outdoor section. I believe the indoor actually has 2 floors, with a restaurant on the top and a lounge on the 1st floor. I didn’t get to check out the upstairs restaurant because we sat outside, but I am guessing it was equally nice.
The place is definitely a little on the pricier side, but i would say not so pricy compared to NY standards. Most appetizers run at about $10-$14 and most Entrees run at around $25-30. Drinks were around $14. The place was also participating in restaurant week, but the choice of items you could order was limited. I believe the lunch price for the restaurant week menu was $25 and $35 for dinner. It was supposed to be a 3 course meal with tapas size portions.
The restaurant actually had a pretty decent sized menu. To my surprise, they had a pretty big vegetarian menu as well (you have to specifically ask for the vegetarian menu). Portions were not too big, but not small either.
The food was good and definitely on the spicier side. If you are a spice lover like me, you would definitely get your money’s worth here. I do wish the portions were a little bigger though (or that the place was cheaper).
Overall, the place makes a good first date place, or a venue for an intimate dinner. The decor is definitely nice and the waitress and hostess were both nice. A place I would definitely recommend to others.
P.S. The pain puri margarita did taste like crap, and we knew it would, but we had to try it because we were so intrigued by the concept.
